Solenoid Directional Valve: When Power Loss Happens

Power cuts are not usually part of the design brief. Then a machine stops mid-cycle, a cylinder holds a load in the air, and someone asks how to bring it down safely.

That question comes up more often than expected in industrial hydraulic systems. Most solenoid directional valves simply stop when the signal disappears. The spool stays where it is, or returns to neutral, and the actuator waits. For equipment that needs to be moved, released or lowered before power returns, waiting is not an option.

A second way to shift the valve

The WEMM Solenoid Directional Valve with Emergency Handle works on two inputs. Normally, an electrical signal shifts the spool and the actuator follows. When power is lost or the solenoid fails, a manual handle lets the operator shift the valve by hand, without removing covers.

The handle is a backup, not a replacement. It is there for the few minutes when the solenoid cannot do its job.

Before ordering, check two things

The T port rating is lower than the P/A/B rating and varies by size. It reflects return line pressure, which is usually below the main circuit.

The spool type decides what happens when the solenoid is de-energized or the handle is released. Some spools hold the actuator in place. Some return it. Some unload the pump. If the schematic is not clear on this, send it over and we will confirm the model code.

Where it fits

The WEMM sits in the medium-flow range. It suits industrial hydraulic systems where electrical control is standard, but a manual backup is needed for safe shutdown or recovery.
