The P80 uses manual levers to shift the spools. You push or pull the lever to move the spool, which opens a path from the P port to the A or B work port. The oil goes into the cylinder, and the machine moves. When you let go of the lever, a spring pushes the spool back to neutral. The cylinder stops. The lever pattern is the same layout used on most other mobile equipment-operators do not have to learn a new way of working.

Inside the valve, the circuit is a standard open-center design. Oil comes in through the P port and passes straight through the valve when all the levers are in neutral. When you shift a lever, the spool blocks the neutral passage and sends oil to the selected work port. The oil that returns from the cylinder exits through the T port. There is also a relief valve built into the valve body. If the pressure gets too high, the relief valve opens and diverts oil back to the tank.
